Bert Porter
Bert joined the army 15th August 1915 and went into the 4th Buffs, East Kent Regiment. He was transferred into “C” company, 1st/18 battalion, London Regiment (London Irish Rifles) as a rifleman. He was killed in action 1st October 1916, aged 19, in the battle of the Somme in France. He is remembered with honour on the Thiepval Memorial. He is also commemorated on Christchurch School Memorial and Folkestone War Memorial.
Bertie Porter was born (September) 1897 in the Elham District to Elizabeth and William Porter, a blacksmith. The family lived at Darlington Street, Folkestone. He had several brothers and sisters, Maud, William Henry, Charles, and Alf. Bert was educated at Christchurch School. At the age of 14 (1901 census) Bert was a shop boy along with his brothers Charles and Alf.
